Importance of Interoperability in Health Care

Sunny Bhardwaj

  • Data sharing among multiple health care systems
    • Interoperability enables the healthcare system to exchange health care data between various healthcare entities, such as hospitals, clinics, labs, pharmacies, and insurance companies. It helps in improving collaboration among the service providers to understand the patient's health properly.
  • Follow compliance and regulations
    • As interoperability enables data sharing, healthcare systems should be designed to support all health data points in a compliant manner, ensuring that both inbound and outbound data flows are properly managed. This approach promotes adherence to healthcare regulations such as HIPAA, GDPR, PHIPA, and others.
  • Improved patient care
    • Interoperability helps in maintaining the single and recent proof of health data that ensures the patient is getting the right care at the right time from the right service provider.
  • Better care coordination
    • As interoperability enables data sharing between service providers, it improves care coordination. E.g., if a patient is discharged from a hospital, follow-up care providers can immediately access the latest treatment records.
  • Provide data-driven insights
    • Interoperability enables health care service providers with access to integrated health data from multiple sources, enabling better decision-making. Predictive analysis can be easily done to identify risks, recommend treatments, and improve patient health outcomes.
  • Reduce medical errors
    • Interoperability promotes the exchange of digital health data, reducing human errors in diagnoses and clinical or non-clinical documentation. As a result, errors during documentation and data exchange are minimized.
